Raoni Barcelos discussed his knockout loss to Umar Nurmagomedov in a detailed interview, stating he still doesn't understand how the punch landed. Barcelos explained he had a perfect training camp and his sparring partner Davey had perfectly replicated Nurmagomedov's style, including his takedown setups. He noted that Nurmagomedov didn't attempt a single takedown despite usually taking everyone down in the first round. Barcelos admitted he was too cautious about the wrestling threat and regrets not being more aggressive or attempting his own takedowns. He said the knockout punch came from an unexpected angle and was unlike anything Nurmagomedov had used to finish opponents before. After the loss, Barcelos underwent brain scans in Brazil which came back normal, and he has since regained confidence in his ability to take punches after absorbing heavy shots in subsequent victories. Now 38 years old and riding a four-fight winning streak (victories over Quinonez, Talbot, Garbrandt, and Simon), Barcelos credits smarter training, better nutrition, reduced hard sparring, and investment in recovery equipment for his continued success. He is scheduled to face Montel Jackson on April 25 at the Apex.
