The headline is a 12-point decision gap. Turn that around and the rounded finish rates are 49% in the large cage and 61% in the small one. That is roughly a 24% relative rise from the large-cage baseline.
Percentage points matter here. Moving from 49% to 61% is a 12-point increase, not a 12% increase. The published method shares also contain rounding, so the small-cage column totals 101%.
Submissions show the larger method shift. Their share rises eight points, against five points for knockouts and technical knockouts. Significant-strike pace rises too. The chart therefore doesn't support a simple story where the small cage only helps grapplers.
Does the smaller UFC cage cause more finishes?
The honest answer is not yet.
UFC PI's chart is a cross-sectional comparison. It groups fights by cage size and reports what happened. It doesn't randomly assign the same matchups to different cages. Without that control, cage size stays tangled with the venue, year and fighters selected for each card.

An early 2020 snapshot shows why patience matters. After three UFC shows in the 25-foot cage, MMA Fighting reported a 55% finish rate there versus 48% in the 30-foot cage. Three events were far too few for a firm conclusion. The later UFC PI sample is better, but 174 small-cage fights can still move quickly when the card mix changes.
Why might less space change a UFC fight?
The mechanism is plausible. It just isn't measured cleanly by the headline table.
The fence arrives sooner
A retreating fighter has fewer steps before the boundary interrupts a straight exit. That can create more clinch entries, takedown chains and pocket exchanges. Gift's finding of more fence time fits this explanation.

A pressure fighter may spend less energy closing the floor. The opponent may spend more time changing direction. Over three or five rounds, those small spatial costs can build.

Gamrot enters with a 26-4 record and a 9-4 UFC mark. His latest win came by second-round arm-triangle submission against Esteban Ribovics. Salkilld is 12-1 and has won his first five UFC fights. Four of those UFC wins ended in the first round.
The small-cage data touches both men's paths. Earlier fence contact may help Gamrot connect wrestling attempts and keep scrambles alive. Higher exchange rates could also give Salkilld more early finishing chances.
That doesn't produce a pick by itself. The UFC PI table compares groups of past fights, not these two athletes. It doesn't account for Gamrot's defense, Salkilld's takedown reactions, five-round pacing or their current form.

The model should also include variables that compete with cage size:
- weight class and scheduled rounds;
- fighter age, reach and stance;
- pre-fight striking and grappling rates;
- short-notice status and layoff length;
- venue, crowd period and event series;

Interactions may matter more than the main cage feature. A smaller floor could affect high-pressure wrestlers differently from low-output counterstrikers. Testing that requires enough examples of each style in both cages. The 174-fight small-cage sample becomes thin fast once you split it by division, era and style.
For a public prediction, the right language is modest: the setting may raise expected pace or finish variance. Saying the cage adds a fixed number of win-probability points goes beyond the evidence.
What shouldn't you infer from UFC cage-size stats?
First, don't treat every APEX fight as an automatic under or finish. Even the rounded small-cage result has 39% going to decision. That is nearly two fights in five.
