Albert and colleagues started with UFC athletes who suffered at least one KO/TKO loss between 2015 and 2023. Each fighter also needed a later bout. That second condition matters because the study asked what happened next.

Among 705 eligible fighters, 545 stayed in the one-knockout group. The other 160 suffered a second straight KO/TKO loss. That creates the headline rate of 22.7%, or just under one in four.

The repeat-loss group was slightly older and heavier on average. It also contained a larger share of men. Those differences were statistically significant before adjustment.

The authors then adjusted for age, sex, weight, prior knockout history, head strikes absorbed and stoppage type. Prior knockout history was the only independent predictor left. Its adjusted odds ratio was 1.13, with a 95% confidence interval from 1.020 to 1.246.

That result points to accumulated history. It does not identify a physical breaking point, and the abstract does not state the model variable's exact unit. So turning 1.13 into a per-knockout percentage would go beyond the published detail.

What does the 22.7% repeat rate actually mean?

It is a conditional rate, not a UFC-wide baseline. Every fighter in the denominator had already lost by KO/TKO and returned for another contest.

The study excludes several important groups:

  • Fighters who retired after the first stoppage
  • Fighters who were released and never returned to the UFC
  • Fighters without another recorded bout during the study window

The comparison also compresses every non-KO/TKO next result into one group. A win and a later submission loss both avoid the repeat outcome. So 77.3% does not mean those fighters all won next.

It also combines KOs and TKOs. A clean knockout, a standing stoppage and a referee intervention after repeated ground strikes can share the same result family. They do not describe the same medical event.

So you cannot say that 22.7% of all UFC fighters suffer back-to-back knockouts. You also cannot use it as one fighter's personal probability. It describes a selected group across nine years.

Does more knockout history raise the risk further?

A separate 2022 study found a clear gradient, though it used a much smaller sample. Hada and colleagues examined 104 male fighters from elite professional MMA events in Japan. Physicians or video evidence identified concussion signs in each fighter's latest bout.

Eight of 35 fighters with no prior KO losses had a concussion in that bout, a rate of 22.9%. The rate reached 40.5% for fighters with one or two prior KO losses. It rose to 65.0% among those with three or more.

Fight volume showed a similar pattern. Fighters with fewer than 30 past bouts had a 37.0% concussion rate. Those with 30 or more were at 60.8%.

This study measured concussion signs, not merely official results. But it was not UFC-only, included 104 men and assessed one latest bout per fighter. The pattern is concerning. The sample is too narrow for a personal forecast.

Why might knockout losses cluster?

The studies show association, not a single cause. Several paths can produce the same record.

Earlier head trauma may matter

Knockouts and head-strike TKOs expose fighters to impacts that can cause concussion. Hutchison and colleagues reviewed 844 numbered UFC bouts from 2006 through 2012. KOs ended 12.7% of those bouts, while repetitive-strike TKOs ended 19.1%. Together, match-ending head trauma occurred in 31.9%.

That study measured stoppages and video events. It did not diagnose every long-term effect. Still, it shows why a KO/TKO record can act as a rough exposure marker.

Age and weight class can travel with risk

The consecutive-loss group in the 2026 cohort was 0.8 years older and 7.1 lb heavier on average. Those gaps became less useful after the adjusted model considered all variables together.

Heavier fighters also face different force, pace and matchup patterns. A raw weight difference can capture several things at once. It should not be treated as a cause by itself.

Defense and opponent quality are hidden

A fighter may absorb cleaner shots because their reactions slowed. Another may face two elite punchers in a row. A third may accept a short-notice bout or return with the same defensive flaw.

Public fight records cannot fully separate those stories. Matchmaking is not random, either. A recent loss can change the next opponent's level, while a former champion may keep facing top contenders.

Is a fighter's “chin” a real statistic?

No official statistic measures a chin. Fans use the word to mix several traits: awareness, neck strength, balance, recovery, defense and the ability to see a strike coming.

The result can also mislead. A fighter may be hurt badly and survive. Another may receive a fast referee stoppage while still responsive. Both outcomes affect the public story around durability, but only one becomes a KO/TKO loss.

Models should use observable history instead. Useful inputs include prior head-strike stoppages, recent strikes absorbed, age, time between bouts and opponent finishing ability. Even then, the output is a probability. It is not a neurological diagnosis.

What do Volkanovski and Makhachev show?

Alexander Volkanovski shows why repeat risk is not destiny. He suffered consecutive KO losses to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria. He then beat Diego Lopes by decision to reclaim the vacant featherweight title in April 2025. In January 2026, he defeated Lopes again and defended that title.

That comeback does not cancel the population data. It shows the spread inside it. The 77.3% group did not lose its next bout by KO/TKO, and individual careers can move in many directions afterward.

Makhachev supplies the opposite shape. Adriano Martins knocked him out in 2015. UFC Stats lists it as Makhachev's only loss. He then won 16 straight UFC bouts through his November 2025 decision over Jack Della Maddalena.

Neither example proves recovery is guaranteed. Both warn against treating one knockout as a permanent verdict.

How long should a fighter wait after a knockout?

There is no single global UFC suspension. Athletic commissions issue medical suspensions, and rules vary by location. A calendar alone also cannot confirm brain recovery.

The Association of Ringside Physicians recommends minimum suspensions of 30 days after a head-strike TKO. It recommends 60 days after a KO without loss of consciousness and 90 days after a KO with it. The group also recommends no sparring during those periods.

Those are medical recommendations, not a promise that every fighter is ready on day 31, 61 or 91. The same statement calls for specialist clearance and a graded return to fighting. Symptoms should stop progression.

For fans and analysts, layoff length is only one visible field. It does not reveal scans, symptoms, sparring exposure or a physician's examination.

How should analysts use knockout history?

Treat it as a risk feature, not a verdict. The 2026 result supports including prior KO/TKO losses in a fight model. It does not support automatically picking against anyone with one knockout.

Recency should matter. Two stoppages in four months may carry different information from two spread across eight years. The model should also separate clean KOs from other TKOs where reliable data allows.

Opponent context belongs beside history. Facing Topuria after Makhachev is not the same sequence as facing two low-volume decision fighters. Weight class, age and absorbed-strike trends can help describe that context.

Most of all, keep prediction separate from medicine. A model can estimate a fight outcome from records. It cannot clear a fighter to compete or tell whether their brain has recovered.

How solid is this data?

The core study is the best direct UFC sample found for consecutive knockout losses. It covers 705 fighters and nine calendar years. Its adjusted model also tests several plausible confounders instead of relying on the raw 22.7% alone.

But selection bias remains. The design requires a fighter to return after the first KO/TKO. It therefore misses people whose health, release or retirement removed them from the next-fight pool.

The source records are public rather than clinical. KO/TKO labels do not prove a diagnosed concussion. Head strikes absorbed can also be incomplete or inconsistent across events.

The Japanese study adds physician and video assessment, plus a useful prior-loss gradient. Its 104 fighters were all men, and the events were not limited to the UFC. Its categories also leave small groups.

Neither study controls training-room impacts, genetics, sleep, weight cutting or every opponent trait. These gaps prevent a causal claim. The safest conclusion is narrower: repeat KO/TKO losses happen in a meaningful minority, and prior knockout history carries information at group level.
