Chael Sonnen has publicly criticized the UFC's decision not to include Magomed Ankalaev in the vacant light heavyweight title fight. Sonnen pointed out that Ankalaev has a 1-1 record with Alex Pereira and is the only fighter in the top group who has actually defeated Pereira, yet was not even considered for the title bout. Sonnen expressed confusion about why the division's most spectacular fighter (Roundtree), most intriguing (Jamal), or most accomplished (Ankalaev) were excluded from the title fight. He stated that the current matchup has such a weak storyline that people aren't even discussing the absence of the right fighters, concluding that both participants in the scheduled title fight are wrong choices.
