Five-time world champion and 1976 Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling Nikolai Baloboshin revealed how he developed his signature suplex throw in a detailed interview. The technique originated during a USSR championship after a coach dismissively called him a "pusher," motivating Baloboshin to perfect the move or quit wrestling. He trained the movement 100 times on each arm, three sessions daily using spring-loaded equipment with maximum resistance. Baloboshin worked extensively with training dummies to perfect the hip drive, performing 20-30 repetitions to develop the explosive lift that kept him on straight legs while opponents flew over. He eventually mastered the throw in both directions, allowing him to execute it regardless of which way opponents positioned themselves. Training partners recalled being squeezed so tightly they couldn't breathe, with Baloboshin describing how he would disable opponents' arms by bringing his elbows together.
