The main question heading into the Chimaev-Strickland fight is whether Strickland can successfully stand up after being taken down. Training partners and past opponents have offered insights into Strickland's wrestling defense. Luke Rockhold stated that Strickland is incredibly difficult to hold down and will be the toughest test for Chimaev. Jorge Masvidal confirmed that Strickland is very hard to keep on the ground, even when training with heavyweights. Sharaf Davlatmurodov noted that Strickland constantly works with college wrestlers, feels wrestling well, and is excellent at breaking grips, though Davlatmurodov believes Chimaev could hold him for the first one and a half rounds. Past fights with Dricus du Plessis and Kamaru Usman show Strickland has been able to stand up after takedowns, but both opponents had different wrestling styles and deficiencies compared to Chimaev's explosive, chain-wrestling approach.
