Asakura, 32, entered the fight ranked 15th in the flyweight division and carrying a 1-2 record inside the UFC despite having previously contended for a title. The Japanese fighter, who trains out of Japan Top Team, improved his overall record to 22-6 with the finish. Standing five-foot-eight with a 69-inch reach, Asakura operates out of an orthodox stance and has relied primarily on striking throughout his career, averaging 2.27 significant strikes per minute.

Saaiman, 25, came in having won his UFC debut but has now dropped three straight, falling to 12-7 overall and 1-3 in the promotion. The South African southpaw, representing Team CIT, is one of the more active strikers in the division at 5.3 significant strikes landed per minute with a 46 percent accuracy rate. He also shows willingness to mix in the grappling, averaging 0.89 takedowns and 0.7 submission attempts per 15 minutes, though the game plan was not enough to weather Asakura on the night.

Why it matters

  • Asakura's first UFC win keeps his flyweight ranking relevant after back-to-back losses had threatened to end his promotional run
  • The victory over a young, high-output striker adds credibility to Asakura's case for staying active at 125 pounds
  • Saaiman's third consecutive defeat raises questions about his path forward at flyweight, where the division's depth leaves little margin for losing streaks at 25 years old
