Topuria, known as "El Matador," carries a verified record of 17-1-0 into the bout, not the 18-0 figure that has circulated ahead of the card. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who trains out of Climent Club and competes at lightweight, is ranked second in the division. Standing five-foot-seven with a 69-inch reach, he fights out of an orthodox stance and brings a well-rounded offensive game, averaging 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy while also threatening with nearly two takedown attempts per 15 minutes and over one submission attempt per 15 minutes.

Across the cage stands Justin Gaethje, the reigning lightweight champion. "The Highlight" is 28-5-0 and at 37 years old remains one of the most pressure-heavy fighters in the sport. The American, who trains at Genesis Training Center, stands five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach. His striking output is among the highest in the division, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at an imposing 58 percent accuracy. Gaethje virtually never attempts takedowns or submissions, making his game plan straightforward: stand and deliver.

Why it matters

  • Topuria enters as the top pound-for-pound fighter but holds the number-two divisional ranking, meaning a win would consolidate his status at the top of lightweight.
  • Gaethje brings championship gold and a significant striking volume and accuracy advantage on the feet.
  • The style matchup pits Topuria's multi-dimensional attack against a champion who has built his entire identity on forward pressure and heavy hands.
  • A title change would mark Topuria's arrival as a two-division threat and reshape the lightweight landscape heading into the second half of 2026.
