Shara Magomedov has disclosed that he was fighting through a severe case of dengue fever when he stepped into the cage against Marc-Andre Barriault last July, revealing for the first time the full extent of the health crisis he endured in the lead-up to that contest.

The Russian middleweight, known as "Bullet," contracted the mosquito-borne illness during a training camp in Thailand. He spent roughly two weeks bedridden with a fever reaching 40 degrees Celsius, developing pustules and suffering hair loss before flying directly from Thailand to Abu Dhabi while barely recovered. Despite arriving in that condition, Magomedov still managed to win the fight — only to find himself on an operating table shortly afterward, spending two weeks unable to breathe properly.

Magomedov, now 32 years old, carries a 17-1 record and trains out of Gorets Fight Club. The six-foot-two orthodox striker is one of the more dangerous finishers in the middleweight division, landing 5.93 significant strikes per minute at a striking accuracy of 62 percent — a figure that ranks among the elite at 185 pounds.

His opponent that night, Marc-Andre Barriault, was no soft touch. The 36-year-old Canadian, nicknamed "Powerbar," holds a 17-11 record and fights out of Kill Cliff FC. Standing six-foot-one with a 74-inch reach, Barriault lands 5.65 significant strikes per minute and also brings a modest wrestling threat, averaging 0.34 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • Magomedov winning at full strength is noteworthy on its own; winning through a dengue fever recovery reframes the performance entirely.
  • The post-fight medical episode raises questions about how the illness affected his overall timeline and activity since last July.
  • As one of the more striking-efficient fighters in the middleweight division, any prolonged health disruption carries real implications for his ranking trajectory.
