Sharabutdin Magomedov returned from an 11-month layoff to defeat Michel Pereira by unanimous decision at UFC Baku, improving to 5-1 in the UFC. The victory was underwhelming, with Magomedov relying largely on distance work after a difficult opening round, and a point deduction was nearly assessed for hair-grabbing and an eye poke. Magomedov stated post-fight that he had anticipated Pereira's right hand and was looking to counter it, but over-committed to targeting the chin, which prevented him from finishing the fight.

Sharabutdin Magomedov returned to the octagon after an 11-month absence and picked up a unanimous decision victory over Michel Pereira at UFC Baku, moving his UFC record to 5-1. The win, however, was far from convincing, and Magomedov leaves Baku with questions attached to what should have been a straightforward statement performance.

Pereira, known as "Demolidor," is a 32-year-old Brazilian middleweight ranked fifteenth in the division. Fighting out of Overcome Academy, the six-foot-one orthodox striker carries a 73-inch reach and lands 4.46 significant strikes per minute at a 51 percent accuracy rate. He also adds a wrestling dimension to his game, averaging 1.21 takedowns per 15 minutes. Coming in at 32-15-0, Pereira is a seasoned and unpredictable opponent whose offensive output makes him dangerous across three rounds.

Magomedov struggled in the opening round and spent much of the fight working at range rather than engaging in the explosive exchanges that have defined his reputation. Officials came close to deducting a point after Magomedov was flagged for hair-grabbing and an eye poke, adding a layer of controversy to an already underwhelming display.

Post-fight, Magomedov acknowledged the tactical miscalculation himself, saying he had expected Pereira's right hand and set himself up to counter it, but became too fixated on targeting the chin. That single-mindedness, he admitted, cost him a finish.

Why it matters

  • Magomedov improves to 5-1 in the UFC but the cautious performance may slow his climb toward the top ten of the middleweight division
  • A near point deduction for fouls could draw scrutiny from matchmakers and the athletic commission
  • Pereira drops to 32-15-0 but remains ranked fifteenth, meaning the loss does little to clarify the logjam in the lower half of the middleweight rankings
  • Magomedov's ring rust after 11 months away appears to have been a genuine factor, raising durability questions heading into his next assignment
