Ian Machado Garry has made his intentions clear ahead of his welterweight title challenge against Islam Makhachev at UFC 330 on August 15, and he is not interested in a quick finish.

Speaking publicly ahead of the bout, Garry explained that an early knockout would only generate excuses from Makhachev's camp and leave questions unanswered. Instead, the 28-year-old Irishman wants four rounds of sustained dominance before closing the show — and he says he plans to announce the stoppage to the crowd before delivering it.

Garry, nicknamed "The Future," enters the fight ranked first in the welterweight division with a record of 17-1-0. Standing six-foot-three with a 74-inch reach, he brings the significant physical advantages in height and range that will define the tactical matchup. He lands 4.78 significant strikes per minute, making him one of the more active strikers in the division.

Makhachev, the reigning welterweight champion, comes in at 28-1-0 and holds the number-one pound-for-pound ranking. The 34-year-old Russian southpaw from Eagles MMA stands five-foot-ten with a 70-inch reach. While his striking output of 2.63 significant strikes per minute is lower than Garry's, he compensates with elite grappling, averaging 3.2 takedowns and 1.1 submission attempts per 15 minutes, alongside a remarkable 58 percent striking accuracy.

Why it matters

  • Garry's stated plan to dominate four full rounds directly challenges Makhachev's well-documented ability to grind opponents down through wrestling and positional control
  • A Garry victory would hand Makhachev just his second career loss and mark a significant shift in the welterweight landscape
  • The reach and height disparity favors Garry on the feet, while Makhachev's grappling credentials represent the central threat to that approach
