The formula is simple:

Striking accuracy = significant strikes landed / significant strikes attempted × 100

UFC Stats uses significant strikes for the career field called Str. Acc. It doesn't divide all landed strikes by all attempted strikes. That distinction matters because short clinch or ground shots may count as total strikes without entering the significant-strike column.

FightMetric, the system behind UFC Stats, defined significant strikes as all distance strikes plus power strikes in the clinch and on the ground. Small, short clinch and ground strikes stay in the total-strike count. The word "significant" describes a counting category. It doesn't certify that every listed blow caused major damage.

A worked UFC Stats example

Ilia Topuria landed 21 of 29 significant attempts against Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. The raw calculation is 21 / 29 × 100 = 72.4%. UFC Stats displays 72% on the fight page.

Oliveira landed 9 of 16, which equals 56.25%. The page displays 56%. Both percentages describe that short fight only. They aren't the fighters' career rates.

These pages show whole percentages below the decimal calculation. Keep the landed and attempted totals when you need exact arithmetic. A displayed 52% hides the exact fraction and decimal.

What counts as an attempt or a landed strike?

An attempt must enter the relevant UFC Stats category. FightMetric's research definition requires a fully committed strike, so a feint isn't an attempt. A recorded miss raises the denominator but not the numerator. A recorded landing raises both.

The location split changes what enters the significant column:

  • At distance, FightMetric counts landed strikes as significant strikes.
  • In the clinch, it separates power strikes from small, short work.
  • On the ground, it makes the same power-versus-short-strike split.

Does higher striking accuracy win UFC fights?

A 2017 performance study used 234 men's UFC bouts with a winner from July through December 2014. Significant strike accuracy appeared among the variables that separated wins from losses. A rate-based decision tree classified outcomes at 76.3% ± 5.1% across its cross-validation folds.

That finding needs a tight label. The model used actions recorded during completed fights. It explained outcomes after the action occurred; it wasn't a clean pre-fight prediction test. The sample covered only six months, excluded women, and came from the 2014 UFC. Grappling and ground-strike measures also mattered.

A more accurate fighter can still lose to higher output, more damaging offense, or productive grappling. Accuracy can also rise in a quick finish because the winner landed a few clean shots from a dominant position. One percentage can't describe all those paths.

How should you compare UFC striking stats?

Start with accuracy, then add the missing context.

Check the attempt sample

Twenty attempts tell you little about a career skill. UFC's Record Book requires at least 5 UFC fights and 500 significant strike attempts for its accuracy leaderboard. That filter doesn't remove every bias, but it blocks tiny samples from leading the table.

For prospects, read the fraction as well as the percentage. A rate built from few attempts can move sharply after one round. A rate built from hundreds of attempts is more stable.

Pair accuracy with pace

Significant strikes landed per minute, or SLpM, tells you about successful output. Accuracy tells you how often attempts land. You need both.

A low-volume counterstriker and a high-volume pressure fighter can share the same accuracy. Their fights won't look alike. Attempt rate, which you can derive from landed volume and accuracy, helps expose that difference.

Split distance, clinch, and ground work

This is the best correction available on a standard fight page. A high ground percentage may reflect dominant position. A strong distance percentage usually comes from harder landing conditions. Don't merge them without checking the mix.

The UFC's expected-accuracy approach goes one step further. It compares a fighter's actual conversion with the rate expected from that shot-location mix. Public career profiles still foreground raw accuracy, so you must add this context yourself.

Add defense and damage clues

Striking defense measures the share of opponents' significant attempts that don't land. Strikes absorbed per minute adds the pace of incoming significant-strike volume. Knockdowns can show effect, while target splits show where strikes landed.

None of these fields directly measures force. A clean head kick and a range-finding jab can each add one landing. Watch the fight, or use detailed round data, before turning a percentage into a claim about damage.

Adjust for opponents and time

Career averages mix early development, prime years, late decline, and changing weight classes. They also treat every opponent as part of one pool. A recent rolling window may describe present form better, but it has a smaller sample.

For a head-to-head comparison, ask how each fighter gets the number. Then test that route against the opponent's defense and likely positions. That's more useful than picking the larger percentage.

How solid is this data?

The arithmetic is transparent once the landed and attempted counts are set. UFC Stats provides round, target, and position splits for individual bouts. Its career pages make broad comparisons easy.

The limits sit in the inputs and interpretation. Rapid actions can be hard to classify. Significant-strike rules treat distance, clinch, and ground work differently. Career averages blend opponents and eras. Short fights produce unstable percentages.

The 234-bout study supports accuracy as one outcome-related field, not a stand-alone forecast. It used male UFC bouts from a six-month window in 2014. The UFC leaderboard imposes a 5-fight and 500-attempt filter, but its rankings still lack opponent and position adjustment.
