How Is UFC Striking Defense Calculated? Str. Def Explained

UFC striking defense is the share of an opponent’s significant-strike attempts that fail to land. The formula is opponent misses divided by opponent attempts, multiplied by 100. If opponents land 80 of 200 attempts, the fighter’s Str. Def is 60%. That sounds simple, but the number needs context. It measures avoidance against the opponents faced. It does not measure damage, chin, blocks alone, total-strike defense, or who deserved to win.

How is UFC striking defense calculated?
UFC Stats labels the field Str. Def. and defines it as significant-strike defence. More precisely, it is the percentage of opponents’ significant strikes that did not land.
The calculation is:
Str. Def = opponent significant-strike misses / opponent significant-strike attempts × 100
You can also calculate it as 100% minus the opponents’ combined significant-strike accuracy. The denominator belongs to the opponents, not the defending fighter.
Suppose three opponents attempt 200 significant strikes in total. They land 80 and miss 120. Divide 120 by 200, then multiply by 100. The displayed defense rate is 60%.

That last row matters. Career Str. Def pools attempts. A bout with 200 incoming attempts carries more weight than one with 20. Averaging the two bout percentages would give each bout equal weight and can produce a different answer.
What counts toward UFC Str. Def?
The metric uses significant strikes, not every strike. FightMetric’s glossary describes that group as all distance strikes plus power strikes in the clinch and on the ground. Short clinch and ground strikes sit in the total-strike count instead.
That definition creates a common trap. “Significant” is a data category. It does not mean every listed strike caused clear damage.
Str. Def also does not tell you how an attempt failed. A fighter might slip, step away, parry, block, or make the opponent fall short. The published career percentage groups unsuccessful attempts together. It does not separate those defensive actions.
Target and position still matter. Avoiding a jab to the body is not the same event as avoiding a head kick. Yet each unsuccessful significant attempt adds one miss to the formula.
What is a good UFC striking defense percentage?
There is no official “good” cutoff. The UFC Record Book offers a better benchmark than a made-up grade.
Its significant-strike defense leaderboard requires five UFC fights and 500 attempts by opponents. On August 19, 2026, Georges St-Pierre led at 73.1%. Phil Davis followed at 72.3%, then Ryan Bader at 71.8%. The tenth listed fighter, Jacqueline Cavalcanti, stood at 68.6%.
That is elite leaderboard territory, not the normal standard for every style or division. The threshold also removes fighters whose eye-catching rate rests on little incoming volume.
Four familiar careers show the wider range:

These are career profile figures, not a ranking of defensive skill. Topuria, Silva, Adesanya, and Oliveira fought different opponents across different eras and weight classes. Their tactics also create different types of exchanges.
The table does show why 60% is easy to read. Opponents landed 40 of every 100 recorded significant attempts against Silva’s career sample. It does not say where those strikes landed or how much they hurt.
Why are Str. Def and SApM different?
Str. Def is a rate. SApM is significant strikes absorbed per minute. You need both because efficiency and volume answer different questions.
Imagine two fighters who each post 60% defense over 15 minutes. Fighter A faces 100 attempts and absorbs 40 strikes. Fighter B faces 200 and absorbs 80. Their defense percentages match, but Fighter B absorbs twice as many strikes in the same time.
That can happen through pace, pressure, cage position, or willingness to trade. Grappling time also cuts the number of striking opportunities. A low SApM may reflect clean defense, low engagement, long control phases, or some mix of all three.
The real profiles make the distinction clear. Silva’s listed 60% defense sits beside 2.05 SApM. Topuria’s higher 62% sits beside 3.97 SApM. This does not make either figure wrong. Their opponents generated incoming attempts at different rates.

Does a higher Str. Def mean better defense?
It is evidence of better avoidance within the recorded sample. It is not a complete measure of defense.
A high rate can reward distance control and reactions. It can also rise when opponents throw from poor range. A low rate may belong to a fighter who accepts light touches to create harder counters.
Opponent quality is another problem. Defending attempts from accurate, varied strikers is different from facing raw attackers. UFC Stats publishes the career result without adjusting for opponent accuracy, stance, reach, or target mix.
Career averages can hide change. A fighter may improve after switching camps, slow with age, or alter style after moving divisions. One number blends those phases.
Use Str. Def as a description of what happened. Do not turn it into a trait that never moves.
Can UFC striking defense help compare a matchup?
Yes, if you pair it with the attacker’s numbers and actual tape. Start with four checks.
- Compare Str. Def with the opponent’s significant-strike accuracy and output.
- Check SApM, because the percentage alone hides incoming pace.
- Review recent fight tables by target and position, rather than trusting only the career average.
- Note sample size, opponent level, stance, reach, age, and time away.
Ilia Topuria’s 62% does not mean his next opponent will land exactly 38%. The new opponent supplies a different accuracy, pace, stance, and threat mix. Wrestling can change the available striking time too.
This is also why subtracting one fighter’s accuracy from the other’s defense does not create a sound prediction. Both statistics came from different schedules. Their interaction is not a simple subtraction problem.
A prediction model can use the raw histories behind those summaries. It should keep every input dated before the bout being predicted. It should also test whether defense adds value after opponent quality and pace are included.
Does Str. Def measure damage or chin?
No. It measures whether significant attempts landed under the stats definition.
A glancing kick and a clean knockdown can each enter the landed column. Their effects are nowhere near equal. Str. Def gives both the same role in its percentage.
Chin is different again. It describes a fighter’s ability to take damaging shots without losing function. The public Str. Def field has no force reading, medical outcome, or recovery measure.
Oliveira’s listed 48% cannot tell you how well he recovered from any specific strike. Anderson Silva’s 60% cannot identify his best defensive technique. You need the bout footage and detailed round table for those questions.
Does striking defense decide UFC rounds?
No. Judges do not award rounds to the higher Str. Def percentage.
California’s published Unified Rules and judging material tells officials to assess the effect of legal strikes. The newer fighter-effectiveness section places damage first, then dominance and duration. A career avoidance percentage appears nowhere in that process.
Consider a simple round. Fighter A makes 18 light distance attempts miss but gets dropped by Fighter B’s one clean counter. The formula records many successful defenses for A. The knockdown can still be the round’s defining action.
Stats help you reconstruct activity. They do not replace judging criteria.
How solid is this data?
The formula and career figures come from UFC Stats, the public home of FightMetric-style data. The leaderboard adds a useful floor: five UFC fights and 500 opponent attempts. That reduces the worst small-sample rankings.
Several limits remain. The public percentage has no uncertainty range. It does not adjust for opponent skill, division, era, target, or position. It also combines a fighter’s recorded career into one number, so recent form can disappear inside old rounds.
The category itself is broad. All distance strikes enter the significant group, while short clinch and ground strikes may not. The percentage also cannot split slips from blocks or show the force of a landed shot.
Our four-fighter table is descriptive. It is not an outcome study, and it does not prove that one style works better. The fighters are not matched by age, schedule, division, or number of attempts.
Use the number for what it is: a clean rate of recorded opponent misses. For anything larger, bring more data.

Is 60% striking defense good in the UFC?

Why can a fighter have high Str. Def and high SApM?

Is UFC striking defense the same as blocking percentage?
No. The public metric includes all significant attempts that fail to land. It does not tell you whether each failure came from a block, parry, slip, step, or poor opponent aim.
Does UFC Str. Def include total strikes?
No. The career field uses significant strikes. Short clinch and ground strikes can count as total strikes without entering the significant-strike calculation, so total-strike defense would require a separate calculation.
