Sonnen pointed out that Ankalaev has a 1-1 record with Alex Pereira and is the only fighter in the division who has defeated Pereira, yet he was not even considered for the title bout. Sonnen expressed confusion over why the title fight doesn't feature the division's most exciting fighter (Roundtree), most intriguing (Jamal Hill), or most accomplished (Ankalaev). He concluded that the current title fight has such a weak storyline that people aren't even discussing the fact that it features the wrong participants. Sonnen believes both fighters in the upcoming title bout are the wrong choices.
