Russian journalist and current fighter manager Azamat Bostanov shared memories from UFC 223 in Brooklyn eight years ago when Khabib Nurmagomedov became UFC champion. Bostanov recalled being initially told by manager Ali Abdelaziz to stay away from the team, but Khabib intervened, saying "This is our guy, he's just doing his work" and welcomed him. He described a tense atmosphere with 20-30 Dagestanis gathering at the hotel to prevent provocations from Conor McGregor's team. Despite being exhausted after defeating Al Iaquinta for the title, Khabib spent time with fans, posed for photos with his championship belt, and spoke with everyone who wanted to greet him. Bostanov also noted that Zabit Magomedsharipov broke two fingers during his warmup at the same event but fought anyway without telling the athletic commission.
