Five-time world champion and 1976 Olympic gold medalist Nikolai Balboshin shared how he developed his signature suplex throw in Greco-Roman wrestling after being called a "pusher" by a coach during a USSR championship. The insult motivated him to perfect the technique through intensive training, performing 100 repetitions on each arm three times daily using resistance equipment. Balboshin explained that proper execution requires maximum hip drive and keeping the legs straight while lifting the opponent. He eventually mastered the throw in both directions after initially only being able to execute it to the left. His training partners reported that his grip was so powerful they couldn't breathe, and Balboshin emphasized working with live partners over dummies for developing the complete technique.
