Quick read

Dan Ige is apparently considering a move down to the bantamweight division following recent struggles at featherweight. In his last six fights, Ige has gone 2-4, and most recently lost by knockout to Melquizael Costa in the first round. The consecutive losses and knockout defeat appear to have motivated Ige to explore options at a lower weight class. Moving to bantamweight would represent a significant change for the Hawaiian fighter, who has competed at featherweight for most of his UFC career. The post asks fans whether they think the weight cut is worthwhile, suggesting the move is still under consideration rather than finalized.

Ige, nicknamed "50K," carries a 19-11 record and currently sits ranked thirteenth in the featherweight division. The 34-year-old from Hawaii, who trains out of Xtreme Couture, has gone 2-4 over his last six outings — a run that appears to have prompted serious reflection on his future in the 145-pound class. His most recent appearance ended in a first-round knockout loss, and he lands 3.6 significant strikes per minute at a 45 percent accuracy rate. Standing five-foot-seven with a 71-inch reach, Ige is physically on the smaller side for featherweight, which may make the bantamweight option more viable.

The fighter who handed Ige that latest defeat is Brazilian prospect Melquizael Costa, fighting out of Chute Boxe Joao Emilio. Costa, 29, holds a 26-8 record and fights out of a southpaw stance. He lands 4.29 significant strikes per minute at 47 percent accuracy and also mixes in 1.53 takedowns per 15 minutes, making him a well-rounded threat. At five-foot-ten with a 71-inch reach, Costa is notably taller than Ige despite competing in the same weight class.

Why it matters

  • A move to bantamweight at 135 pounds would be the most significant divisional shift of Ige's UFC career
  • His 2-4 record over his last six fights puts his featherweight ranking under pressure
  • Ige's size — five-foot-seven, smaller than many featherweights — could translate favorably at 135 pounds
  • The post soliciting fan opinion suggests no formal decision has been made
