According to Baranievski, he accepted the bout with Guskov but the Uzbek-born Russian fighter did not accept it. Guskov positioned himself as ready to fight anyone, stating "I'm a Russian guy who grew up in Uzbekistan, ready to share the cage at any time." His coach Gor Azizyan criticized Baranievski, suggesting he became overconfident after victories over Kopyllov and Azamat, stating that Baranievski needs his "wings clipped" and should stop talking about Russian themes if he doesn't accept the Guskov fight.
