Islam Makhachev has once again drawn attention to the construction crisis in Dagestan, particularly in Makhachkala. The lightweight champion criticized the uncontrolled building boom, which includes hastily erected low-quality residential complexes built too close together and numerous unauthorized construction projects. Seventeen days ago, during flooding in Dagestan, Makhachev called on regional leadership to address the construction problem, stating that "Makhachkala has turned into one chaotic construction site." More recently, he reposted content from geographer Dmitry Koryukhin, a schoolteacher who has lived in Dagestan for six years and was named Teacher of the Year in 2025, who shared aerial photographs of Makhachkala illustrating the urban disaster. The post notes that similar construction issues plague many Russian cities, where population remains stagnant or declining yet massive 30-story residential complexes continue to be built.
