Quillan Salkilld remains frustrated that the only man to defeat him in his MMA career, Pablo Torreallba, retired immediately after their fight. On February 13, 2021, Salkilld made his MMA debut against Torreallba, losing via rear-naked choke in the second round. That was Torreallba's only professional MMA bout; he never competed again and is now reportedly working as a coach. Salkilld noted he has a "curse" of losing his first fight in every combat discipline, including his professional and amateur careers. He stated he has tried to erase the memory of the loss entirely as his way of coping with defeat.

Quillan Salkilld has opened up about the one blemish on his MMA record — a debut loss to Pablo Torreallba, a man who walked away from the sport immediately after handing it to him.

On February 13, 2021, Salkilld stepped into professional MMA competition for the first time and was submitted via rear-naked choke in the second round by Torreallba. What followed left Salkilld without any opportunity for redemption: Torreallba never fought again, making that contest his only professional MMA bout. Torreallba is now reported to be working as a coach.

Salkilld, now 26 years old and fighting out of Australia under Luistro Combat Academy, has since rebuilt into one of the more compelling lightweights in his region. He carries a 12-1 record and holds the 15th ranking in the lightweight division. His numbers reflect a relentless, high-volume style — he lands 5.16 significant strikes per minute at a 57 percent accuracy rate, and his grappling is equally aggressive, with 7.95 takedowns per 15 minutes. Standing six feet tall with a 75-inch reach, the orthodox fighter has shown well-rounded tools across his career.

Despite that progress, Salkilld acknowledged the loss still lingers. He described what he called a personal "curse" of dropping the first fight in every combat discipline he has entered, spanning both amateur and professional competition. His stated method of coping has been to block the memory of the defeat out entirely.

Why it matters

  • Salkilld has no path to a rematch, as Torreallba has permanently retired from competition
  • The loss remains the only mark against a 12-1 record in the lightweight division
  • His ranked status at 15th in lightweight means the story of his debut carries more weight as his profile grows
