UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has revealed that his next title defense will be against the winner of the light heavyweight championship bout between Alex Pereira and Yan Gan, once he receives medical clearance to return to full-contact training following an eye injury.

Aspinall, 33, confirmed that the eye injury is healing well and that he expects to be cleared shortly. He stated that the UFC communicated the plan to him directly: Pereira and Gan must first fight, take time to recover, and then the matchup with Aspinall will come together. The English champion says he is comfortable waiting for the fight to take shape.

The undefeated-at-heavyweight Aspinall holds a 15-3 record and currently sits sixth in the pound-for-pound rankings. Fighting out of Team Kaobon, the six-foot-five orthodox heavyweight is one of the most active strikers in the division, landing 7.63 significant strikes per minute at a remarkable 67 percent accuracy. He also contributes on the ground, averaging 2.62 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Standing across from him, whenever that day arrives, will be the winner of a matchup involving Alex Pereira. "Poatan" holds a 13-4 record and is the reigning light heavyweight champion, meaning a win over Gan would set up an historic cross-division title clash. The 38-year-old Brazilian, six-foot-four with a 79-inch reach, lands 5.16 significant strikes per minute at 62 percent accuracy and has built his reputation almost entirely on finishing power rather than grappling volume.

Why it matters

  • A future Aspinall vs. Pereira fight would pit two sitting UFC champions against each other in a rare cross-divisional heavyweight title bout.
  • Aspinall's pound-for-pound ranking and elite striking metrics make him one of the sport's most credible champions; any title defense carries serious divisional weight.
  • The timeline is contingent on the Pereira-Gan outcome and recovery, adding uncertainty to when Aspinall will actually step back into the Octagon.
