UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has provided an update on a lingering eye injury, revealing that healing is progressing well and that medical clearance for full contact training is expected soon. Aspinall, 33, carries a 15-3 record and holds the interim heavyweight title while ranking sixth on the pound-for-pound list. The six-foot-five Englishman, who trains out of Team Kaobon, is one of the most statistically dominant strikers in the division, landing 7.63 significant strikes per minute at a remarkable 67 percent accuracy. He also adds a consistent wrestling threat, averaging 2.62 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Standing across from him in that future matchup will be either Pereira or Gane. Pereira, 38, is the reigning light heavyweight champion out of Brazil with a 13-4 record. The six-foot-four knockout specialist lands 5.16 significant strikes per minute at 62 percent accuracy and would be moving up to challenge for heavyweight gold. Gane, nicknamed Bon Gamin, is the second-ranked heavyweight contender from France with a 14-2 record. The 36-year-old stands six-foot-four with an 81-inch reach and lands 5.29 significant strikes per minute at 61 percent accuracy.

Aspinall noted that the two fighters should meet, take time to recover from what figures to be a demanding fight, and then his matchup can be properly scheduled once all parties are ready.

Why it matters

  • The heavyweight title picture now has a clear path, with Aspinall waiting at the end of the Pereira-Gane collision
  • A Pereira win would be a historic cross-division heavyweight title challenge; a Gane win would set up a rematch of prior heavyweight title contention
  • Aspinall's eye injury timeline means the division could face a brief period of uncertainty before the undisputed title fight is locked in
