Arman Tsarukyan met with Yoel Alvarez in New Jersey and proposed an intriguing future scenario. Tsarukyan joked about their size difference and suggested Alvarez take the 170-pound belt while he captures the 155-pound title, then they could run a rematch. The two previously fought in February 2022, when Tsarukyan stopped Alvarez via ground-and-pound TKO in the second round. Since that loss, Alvarez has been undefeated and is now competing at welterweight, where he secured a victory over Vicente Luque in October. The lighthearted exchange hints at the possibility of a future clash between the two fighters.

Arman Tsarukyan crossed paths with Yoel Alvarez during a meetup in New Jersey, and the lighthearted encounter produced a playful but eyebrow-raising proposal from the lightweight contender.

Tsarukyan, cracking a joke about the size difference between the two men, floated the idea of Alvarez claiming the welterweight title at 170 pounds while he goes out and captures the lightweight belt at 155. Once both held gold, the story goes, they could run it back for a second time. The two originally met in February 2022, with Tsarukyan stopping Alvarez via ground-and-pound TKO in the second round.

Vicente Luque
Vicente Luque

The 29-year-old Russian currently sits as the number-one ranked lightweight contender, carrying a record of 23-3 out of American Top Team. Standing five-foot-seven with a 72-inch reach, Tsarukyan is one of the division's most dangerous wrestlers, averaging 3.26 takedowns per 15 minutes while also posting 3.85 significant strikes landed per minute at 50 percent accuracy.

Since that defeat to Tsarukyan, Alvarez has gone unbeaten and made the jump to welterweight, most recently defeating Vicente Luque in October. Luque, a 34-year-old American competing out of Kill Cliff FC, held a record of 24-12-1 heading into that fight and had long been a measuring stick in the welterweight division, averaging 4.83 significant strikes per minute at 51 percent accuracy.

Why it matters

  • Tsarukyan is already the top lightweight contender, so a title run at 155 pounds is a realistic near-term goal
  • Alvarez's unbeaten run since 2022 and his win over a seasoned welterweight in Luque signals genuine growth at the higher weight class
  • A potential future rematch would carry added narrative weight given the lopsided nature of their first meeting
