Zabit Magomedsharipov claims the UFC repeatedly postponed his fights and made excuses to avoid giving him a title shot. He says he had an agreement that if Yair Rodriguez pulled out a third time, he would automatically get a title fight, but the UFC found new excuses instead. Zabit was offered alternative opponents like Korean Zombie, but he maintains that at the time, only he and Yair were the real title contenders. He believes the UFC avoided making him champion because too many Russian fighters were already dominating the promotion.

Zabit Magomedsharipov has gone on record claiming the UFC deliberately denied him a title shot in the featherweight division, alleging the promotion manufactured excuses to keep him from becoming champion because of concerns over Russian fighters already dominating the roster.

Magomedsharipov, now 35, holds an 18-1-0 professional record and was widely regarded during his UFC run as one of the most dangerous contenders in the featherweight division. Standing six-foot-one with a 73-inch reach, the Russian orthodox fighter was a relentless offensive threat, averaging 4.89 significant strikes landed per minute at 48 percent accuracy, while also threatening opponents on the mat with 5.22 takedowns per 15 minutes. He trains out of Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu.

In a recent interview, Magomedsharipov detailed what he describes as a formal agreement with the UFC: if Yair Rodriguez withdrew from their scheduled bout a third time, he would be granted an automatic title fight. Rodriguez, nicknamed El Pantera, pulled out of matchups on multiple occasions, but Magomedsharipov says the promotion simply found new reasons to bypass the arrangement. He was offered alternative opponents, including Korean Zombie, but insisted that at that point in time only he and Rodriguez were genuine contenders for the belt. His core allegation is that the UFC was unwilling to elevate him because too many Russian fighters were already at the top of the promotion.

Rodriguez, currently ranked third in the featherweight division at 33 years old, carries a 21-6-0 record and averages 4.65 significant strikes per minute out of an orthodox stance for Valle Flow Striking.

Why it matters

  • Magomedsharipov's allegations raise questions about how the UFC manages national representation at the top of its divisions
  • The featherweight title picture was directly affected if his account of a broken verbal agreement is accurate
  • His career effectively stalled without the championship opportunity he believed he had earned
