Ilia Topuria is pushing the boundaries of modern fight preparation, revealing that he has integrated an infrared neurostimulator and AI-assisted physiotherapy into his current training camp.

The reigning pound-for-pound number one contender at lightweight, Topuria — known as "El Matador" — wears the neurostimulator helmet in 15-minute sessions at two separate points in his day. One session takes place before training to sharpen concentration, while a second is worn at night to support mental recovery. Topuria has described the device's effect on his focus as something he cannot replicate even with large quantities of caffeine.

The 29-year-old, who fights out of Climent Club in Spain and carries a professional record of 17 wins and one loss, has also benefited from a modern approach to his physical therapy. His physiotherapist Raul Valdesuso used techniques identified through AI tools to treat a shoulder problem that had been affecting Topuria in camp. The fighter reported meaningful relief and a noticeable improvement in his training performances as a result.

Topuria operates at lightweight, where he is currently ranked second in the division. At five-foot-seven with a 69-inch reach, he fights from an orthodox stance and has built his reputation on high-output striking, landing 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, while also posing a consistent threat on the mat with 1.96 takedowns and 1.1 submission attempts per 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • Topuria's adoption of neurostimulation and AI-informed therapy signals a growing trend of elite fighters turning to technology for marginal performance gains.
  • Resolving a shoulder issue mid-camp is significant for a fighter who relies on both striking output and grappling to impose his style.
  • As the pound-for-pound number one, any detail about Topuria's physical condition and camp progress carries weight for the lightweight division as a whole.
