Quick read

Russian lightweight Nikita Kulshin (9-0 MMA), Justin Gaethje's primary sparring partner heading into his bout with Ilia Topuria, has provided an extensive inside look at the camp. Gaethje trains at altitude in Arvada, Colorado at roughly 1,800–1,900 metres above sea level, spending around two to three hours per week on wrestling-specific work where he impressed with scrambles and unorthodox standup recovery. Coach Wittman's focus is on foot positioning rather than combination selection, and Kulshin noted that Gaethje did work low kicks in sparring — though carefully — and that high-kick training was also included without heavy emphasis. Kulshin added that Gaethje lives alone during camp with a personal chef providing carefully calibrated meals, and that Wittman personally paid him more than the agreed fee for his sparring contribution.

Gaethje, 37, carries a 28-5 record into the bout and holds the UFC lightweight title. The Arizona native trains at altitude in Arvada, Colorado, working at roughly 1,800 to 1,900 metres above sea level. Known as "The Highlight," Gaethje stands five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach and is one of the most prolific strikers in the division, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at a 58 percent accuracy rate. Kulshin, who went 9-0 before joining camp as the primary sparring partner, described Gaethje dedicating around two to three hours per week to wrestling-specific work, where the champion impressed with his scrambles and unorthodox standup recoveries. Low kicks featured in sparring, handled carefully, and high-kick work was also incorporated. Head coach Trevor Wittman's emphasis, according to Kulshin, centered on foot positioning rather than combination selection. Off the mat, Gaethje lives alone during camp, with a personal chef managing precisely calibrated meals. Kulshin also noted that Wittman personally paid him above the originally agreed sparring fee.

Waiting on the other side is Ilia Topuria, ranked number one pound-for-pound and second in the lightweight division at 29 years old. Fighting out of Spain under the banner of Climent Club, "El Matador" holds a 17-1 record and brings his own well-rounded threat, averaging 4.81 significant strikes per minute alongside 1.96 takedowns per 15 minutes and 1.1 submission attempts per 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • Gaethje's altitude training and wrestling polish suggest a deliberate tactical preparation against Topuria's multi-dimensional attack
  • Wittman's foot-positioning focus points to movement and angle work as a potential key to the gameplan
  • Topuria's takedown and submission volume means Gaethje's scramble improvement, highlighted by Kulshin, carries real strategic weight
  • The pound-for-pound number one challenging a champion with elite striking output sets up one of the most compelling lightweight title fights in recent memory
