Ilia Topuria has offered a candid explanation for shoving lightweight champion Justin Gaethje during their face-off at the UFC White House event on June 13, revealing it was a calculated decision to keep his opponent healthy enough to compete.

Topuria, ranked second in the lightweight division and currently sitting atop the pound-for-pound rankings, said he had warned Gaethje not to move closer. When Gaethje ignored that warning, the 29-year-old Spaniard chose to push rather than strike, stating plainly that a punch would have left his opponent unable to make the fight.

The challenger carries a 17-1 record and has built a reputation as one of the most dangerous finishers in the sport. Fighting out of Spain under the Climent Club banner, the five-foot-seven orthodox southpaw lands 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, while also mixing in nearly two takedowns per 15 minutes.

Gaethje, the reigning lightweight champion, brings a 28-5 record into the matchup. The 37-year-old from the United States trains out of Genesis Training Center and is one of the division's most prolific strikers, averaging 6.48 significant strikes per minute at an accuracy rate of 58 percent. At five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach, he holds physical advantages over Topuria in height and range.
