Quick read

Russian lightweight Nikita Kulshin (9-0), who trains alongside Michael Chandler at Kill Cliff FC, says Chandler exclusively does light touch sparring and never engages in full contact sessions at the gym. Kulshin described Chandler as extremely cautious in training — at times asking to have the entire mat to himself for technical drills while others spar around him. Kulshin suggested the contrast between Chandler's restrained gym habits and his all-out cage performances may point to psychological factors.

A training partner of Michael Chandler has revealed that the veteran lightweight never participates in full-contact sparring at Kill Cliff FC, relying exclusively on light touch work during his gym sessions.

Nikita Kulshin, a 9-0 Russian lightweight who trains alongside Chandler at the Florida-based facility, described the 40-year-old as unusually guarded in his preparation. According to Kulshin, Chandler at times requests the entire mat for himself to work technical drills while teammates spar around him, keeping his own training strictly controlled and contact-free.

Chandler, who holds a professional record of 23-11, is one of the most recognizable names in the lightweight division. Standing five-foot-eight with a 71-inch reach, the orthodox fighter from the United States has built his reputation on relentless aggression, averaging 4.04 significant strikes landed per minute at 49 percent accuracy across his career. He also averages 1.96 takedowns per 15 minutes, underscoring a well-rounded approach that has produced some of the sport's most memorable performances.

Kulshin suggested the sharp contrast between Chandler's cautious gym habits and his explosive, all-out style inside the cage may reflect psychological factors rather than any physical limitation.

Why it matters

  • The claims raise questions about how Chandler prepares for the punishment-heavy style that has defined his career
  • At 40 years old, Chandler's training methods will draw scrutiny as he continues competing at the highest level of the lightweight division
  • The account comes from an insider at Kill Cliff FC, lending it more weight than outside speculation, though it represents a single training partner's perspective
