Veteran referee John McCarthy has come out in defense of Ciryl Gane following the controversial finish in his bout against Alex Pereira. McCarthy believes Gane got overly aggressive in his desperation to stop Pereira and began fighting recklessly as a result. He also noted that Pereira was turning his head in an attempt to survive, which caused Gane's punches to land on the back of the skull.
