Referee John McCarthy has come out in defense of Ciryl Gane following controversy over illegal blows during his fight against Alex Pereira. McCarthy believes Gane became overzealous in his attempt to finish Pereira and began acting recklessly in pursuit of a stoppage. He also noted that Pereira was turning his head to survive, which caused Gane's punches to land on the back of the skull.
