Referee John McCarthy has come out in defense of Ciryl Gane following the bout against Alex Pereira. McCarthy believes Gane became overzealous in his attempts to finish Pereira and began fighting recklessly in pursuit of a stoppage. He also noted that Pereira was turning his head in an attempt to survive, which caused some of Gane's punches to land on the back of the head.
