Quick read
Nikita Kulishin, Justin Gaethje's main sparring partner for the Topuria camp, sustained an identical cut from Gaethje's uppercut during training, in the same spot where Topuria was opened up in round one. Kulishin explained that Gaethje deliberately used deep head slips to the outside because Ilia Topuria rarely throws high kicks, allowing Gaethje to safely dip and attack with uppercuts going into a clinch. The technique was developed by coach Trevor Wittman and was drilled repeatedly in camp.
