Justin Gaethje revealed on the Joe Rogan Experience that he never drinks water during training sessions, a habit that extends even through the most grueling conditioning work.

The current lightweight champion, who carries a 28-5-0 record at 37 years old, described the practice as a deliberate mental discipline rather than an accident or oversight. Gaethje said he hydrates thoroughly before and after workouts but treats drinking mid-session as a distraction that pulls his focus away from the task at hand. His trainer Trevor Wittman backed up the claim, pointing to their five-round fight against Tony Ferguson as evidence, confirming that Gaethje did not receive water between a single round that night.

Gaethje, who fights out of Genesis Training Center, is one of the more active strikers in the lightweight division, landing 6.48 significant strikes per minute at a 58 percent accuracy rate. The orthodox fighter stands five-foot-eleven with a 70-inch reach.

Ferguson, the opponent Wittman referenced, is a 42-year-old veteran from the same division carrying a 26-11-0 record. Fighting out of Knuckleheadz MMA, "El Cucuy" has long been known for his unorthodox pressure style, averaging 4.91 significant strikes per minute and nearly one submission attempt per 15 minutes of fight time. He owns a 76-inch reach at the same height as Gaethje.

Why it matters

  • The disclosure adds detail to how Gaethje and Wittman build mental toughness as a structured part of camp
  • It reframes a notable moment from the Ferguson bout, suggesting Gaethje's corner never offered water as part of the same deliberate approach
  • For a champion who relies on sustained output and pressure over 25 minutes, the psychological framework behind his preparation is relevant context for understanding his performance style
