Tensions between UFC matchmakers and the camps of Khamzat Chimaev and Khabib Nurmagomedov reportedly fueled a series of deliberate booking complications for their respective signees. Magomed Gasanov and Umar Vagaev were first matched against each other, then Gasanov was pulled from the card on alleged USADA testing grounds despite reportedly being ready to compete. Vagaev was subsequently offered a fight at 170 pounds against Saygid Izagakhmaev as the only available option, a matchup framed as a lose-lose situation for both Vagaev and the matchmakers' other unwanted fighter.
Reports surfaced on June 22 suggesting that behind-the-scenes friction between UFC matchmakers and the camps of Khamzat Chimaev and Khabib Nurmagomedov has led to deliberate complications in the bookings of their respective signees, Magomed Gasanov and Umar Vagaev. The claims remain unconfirmed, and the UFC has not officially addressed the allegations.

According to the report, Gasanov and Vagaev were initially matched against each other, only for Gasanov to be pulled from the card on USADA testing grounds — grounds his camp reportedly disputes. Vagaev was then presented with a welterweight fight against Saygid Izagakhmaev at 170 pounds, framed internally as the only available option and described as a deliberate lose-lose situation engineered to disadvantage both fighters.
Chimaev, who trains out of Allstars Training Center and carries a 15-1 record, is currently ranked first in the middleweight division and tenth in the pound-for-pound standings. The 32-year-old competes out of the United Arab Emirates and is one of the more polarizing presences in the UFC roster, posting a striking accuracy of 60 percent and averaging more than five takedowns per 15 minutes.

Nurmagomedov, the 37-year-old Russian retired champion with a perfect 29-0 record, has remained active in fighter management and coaching through his Fightspirit Team camp. His influence over fighters entering the UFC has grown considerably since his retirement.
Izagakhmaev, the reported opponent for Vagaev, holds a 22-3 record and trains at the Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov School in Russia. The 31-year-old is a disciplined grappler, averaging four takedowns per 15 minutes with a striking accuracy of 58 percent.

Why it matters
- Allegations of politically motivated booking decisions raise serious questions about matchmaking integrity within the UFC.
- Both Vagaev and Gasanov remain unsigned or unestablished at the UFC level, making them vulnerable to scheduling leverage.
- The reported Vagaev versus Izagakhmaev welterweight matchup pits two fighters from rival management camps against each other under circumstances neither camp reportedly welcomed.
