Quick read

Josh Hokit offered a theory on Ilia Topuria's recent struggles, arguing that Topuria's tendency to dominate his sparring partners has caused those teammates to fear him. According to Hokit, that fear means Topuria is no longer receiving the quality of preparation needed to stay sharp at the top level.

Josh Hokit has offered a pointed theory on why Ilia Topuria has hit a rough patch, suggesting the Spanish-Georgian star's dominance over his own training partners may be working against him.

Hokit, a 28-year-old undefeated prospect carrying a 5-0 record, argued that Topuria's habit of routinely beating up teammates has bred fear in the gym. The result, according to Hokit, is that those sparring partners are no longer willing or able to push Topuria hard enough to keep him competition-ready at the elite level. Without quality resistance in the gym, the theory goes, the sharpness required to perform at the top of the sport begins to erode.

Topuria, 29, is ranked second in the lightweight division and sits at number one in the pound-for-pound rankings, carrying a 17-1 record under the banner of Climent Club. The Spanish fighter operates out of an orthodox stance and brings a well-rounded offensive game, landing 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy while also generating 1.96 takedowns per 15 minutes. His submission attempts run at 1.1 per 15 minutes, making him a threat across all areas of the fight.

Why it matters

  • Topuria is the current pound-for-pound number one, meaning any perceived decline carries significant divisional and rankings weight at lightweight
  • Hokit's critique targets the structural quality of Topuria's training environment, not his physical skills or motivation
  • The style matchup concern is indirect — if sparring quality has genuinely dropped, opponents with elite preparation could exploit gaps that Topuria's camp is not addressing
