Themba Gorimbo has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, ending his career as a UFC welterweight after posting a heartfelt message to Instagram on a Thursday evening in late June 2026. In the post, the Zimbabwean fighter said he had "given all I can" to the sport and signaled he was ready to move on to the next chapter of his life.

Gorimbo, nicknamed "The Answer," closes out his career with a professional record of 14 wins and 7 losses. The 35-year-old from Zimbabwe stood six feet one inch tall with a 77-inch reach and competed out of MMA Masters. Over the course of his career he developed a reputation as a well-rounded threat, averaging 5.07 takedowns per 15 minutes while posting a striking accuracy of 60 percent and landing 2.72 significant strikes per minute. He had openly aspired to one day hold UFC gold at welterweight.

The retirement announcement comes shortly after a narrow split-decision defeat to Jonathan Micallef at UFC Perth earlier in June 2026. That loss appeared to serve as the turning point that led Gorimbo to step away from competition.

Why it matters

  • Gorimbo's exit removes one of the more recognizable Zimbabwean fighters from the UFC welterweight division
  • His 14-7 record and strong takedown numbers suggest he remained a competitive presence in the division even at 35
  • The loss to Micallef in Australia proved to be the final bout of a career that carried significant meaning beyond the sport for fans across Africa
