Welterweight contender Belal Muhammad dropped an unconfirmed piece of news following the main event in Baku on June 27, claiming that featherweight standout Yair Rodriguez intends to move up to lightweight. Muhammad also floated a potential matchup between Rodriguez and lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev at the new weight class, though neither the UFC nor Rodriguez's camp has officially confirmed any of this.

Rodriguez, known as "El Pantera," carries a 21-6-0 record and currently sits third in the featherweight rankings at 33 years old. The Mexican striker out of Valle Flow Striking stands five-foot-eleven with a 71-inch reach and has built his reputation on dynamic, unorthodox standup. He lands 4.65 significant strikes per minute at 46 percent accuracy, and a move to lightweight would place him in a heavier and arguably more competitive division.

Fiziev, nicknamed "Ataman," would be a formidable first opponent at 155 pounds if that reported matchup were to materialize. The Kazakh fighter, also 33, is ranked seventh in the lightweight division with a 14-5-0 record. He trains out of Tiger Muay Thai and is one of the more dangerous strikers in the weight class, landing 4.71 significant strikes per minute at an impressive 52 percent accuracy while operating out of a switch stance.

Muhammad himself competes at welterweight, where he holds a 24-5-0 record and sits sixth in the divisional rankings and eighth pound-for-pound. It is unclear what prompted the 37-year-old to share this information publicly following the Baku card.

Why it matters

  • Rodriguez moving up would shake the featherweight top five and inject fresh competition into the lightweight division
  • A Rodriguez vs. Fiziev pairing would pit two high-volume, high-octane strikers against each other at 155 pounds
  • This remains unconfirmed, and Rodriguez or the UFC have yet to comment officially
