Topuria, 29, entered the bout ranked second in the lightweight division and sitting atop the pound-for-pound rankings at the time of the fight. Known as "El Matador," the Spain-based Georgian trains out of Climent Club and carries a professional record of 17-1-0. Standing five-foot-seven with a 69-inch reach, he is a well-rounded threat who lands 4.81 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, while also averaging nearly two takedowns and more than one submission attempt per 15 minutes.

He came up short against champion Justin Gaethje, whose record now stands at 28-5-0. The 37-year-old American, known as "The Highlight," fights out of Genesis Training Center and has long been one of the most aggressive strikers in the division. Gaethje lands an impressive 6.48 significant strikes per minute at 58 percent accuracy, making him a formidable champion at lightweight.

Why it matters

  • Topuria's quick recovery will be closely watched given his pound-for-pound status and positioning as the division's No. 2 contender
  • A rematch between Topuria and Gaethje would be one of the most anticipated lightweight bouts in recent memory
  • The stylistic clash between Topuria's multi-dimensional attack and Gaethje's high-volume striking delivered a marquee lightweight showdown, and a second meeting would carry significant title implications
