Edson Barboza: Kevin Lee Was Physically Stronger Than Khabib
Quick read

Edson Barboza has revealed that Kevin Lee, not Khabib Nurmagomedov, was the physically strongest opponent of his career, recalling that Lee simply picked him up and slammed him to the mat. Barboza said Khabib won through superior technique, always staying one step ahead regardless of how Barboza tried to defend. He also reflected on his loss to Justin Gaethee, noting he failed to follow the gameplan by moving into a right overhand he never saw coming, and discussed fighting Khabib with only five weeks of preparation following major shoulder surgery.

Edson Barboza has opened up about the toughest opponents of his career, singling out Kevin Lee as the physically strongest man he has ever faced — a distinction that surprised many given Barboza also shared the cage with the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Barboza, now 40 years old and fighting out of American Top Team, holds a 24-14 record and has spent the bulk of his career as one of the lightweight division's most dangerous strikers, averaging 4.14 significant strikes per minute across his UFC tenure. The Brazilian veteran recalled that Lee did not outmaneuver him — he simply picked him up and planted him on the mat with raw physical force.

Kevin Lee, the 33-year-old Tristar Gym product known as "The Motown Phenom," carries a record of 18-8 and backs up his wrestling credentials with 3.18 takedowns per 15 minutes. That raw physicality clearly left a lasting impression on Barboza, even measured against opponents with far greater accolades.

On Khabib Nurmagomedov, Barboza offered a different kind of praise. The retired Russian champion finished his career at a perfect 29-0, averaging 5.32 takedowns per 15 minutes, and Barboza described him as a technician rather than a brute — always one step ahead no matter how the defense was structured. He also disclosed that he entered that fight with only five weeks of preparation after coming off major shoulder surgery, a significant detail in assessing how that contest unfolded.

Barboza also reflected on his stoppage loss to Justin Gaethje, acknowledging that he abandoned the gameplan and walked into a right overhand he never tracked coming.

Why it matters

  • Barboza's comments reframe the Khabib narrative, separating physical dominance from technical mastery
  • The Kevin Lee revelation highlights how raw strength can leave a longer impression than elite grappling systems
  • The shoulder surgery disclosure adds important context to one of the most lopsided performances of Barboza's career
