Edson Barboza: Kevin Lee was physically stronger than Khabib
Quick read

Edson Barboza has revealed that Kevin Lee, not Khabib Nurmagomedov, was the physically strongest opponent he ever faced. Barboza said Lee simply picked him up and slammed him to the mat, whereas Khabib relied on superior technique, always staying one step ahead on the ground. Barboza also reflected on his loss to Justin Gaethje, explaining he failed to execute the game plan and was caught by a punch he never saw coming. He also disclosed that he fought Beneil Dariush with a torn bicep and went into the Khabib fight just five weeks after major shoulder surgery with no training.

Edson Barboza has opened up about some of the most physically demanding fights of his career, singling out Kevin Lee as the strongest opponent he ever shared the cage with — a distinction many would have assumed belonged to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Barboza, the 40-year-old Brazilian lightweight who trains out of American Top Team, holds a professional record of 24-14. Known for his dangerous striking — he averages 4.14 significant strikes landed per minute across his career — Barboza has faced some of the sport's most elite competition over a lengthy run at the top of the 155-pound division.

In a candid interview, Barboza explained that Lee's physical dominance was raw and direct: Lee simply picked him up and threw him to the mat. Khabib, by contrast, was not the stronger man in the same physical sense, but outmaneuvered Barboza with superior technique and constant positional control on the ground. Khabib, the undefeated Russian legend who retired at 29-0, averaged an exceptional 5.32 takedowns per 15 minutes throughout his career, a figure that speaks to the relentless grappling pressure Barboza described.

Barboza also shed light on difficult circumstances surrounding two other losses. He disclosed that he entered his fight against Beneil Dariush — the American southpaw currently ranked eighth in the lightweight division at 23-8-1 — while carrying a torn bicep. He also revealed that his bout against Khabib came just five weeks after major shoulder surgery, leaving him with virtually no training camp heading into one of the toughest matchups of his life.

On his defeat to Justin Gaethje, Barboza said the game plan simply was not executed and that the finishing punch landed completely unseen.
