Mario Bautista's training camp for his upcoming fight against Cory Sandhagen has taken on an immersive edge, with MMA Lab teammate Jose Delgado stepping into the role of full-time Sandhagen impersonator. Delgado has been mimicking Sandhagen's style as closely as possible to sharpen Bautista's preparation, and reportedly joked that the commitment extended to replicating Sandhagen's look under the bright cage lights.

Bautista enters the matchup ranked tenth in the bantamweight division with a record of 17-3. The 33-year-old out of MMA Lab is a well-rounded threat who lands 5.3 significant strikes per minute at 48 percent accuracy, while also averaging 1.91 takedowns per fifteen minutes and 0.8 submission attempts in the same span.

Sandhagen is ranked third at bantamweight and brings one of the division's most dynamic striking games. The 34-year-old Colorado native trains out of Elevation Fight Team and lands 4.86 significant strikes per minute at 45 percent accuracy. He also mixes in 1.15 takedowns per fifteen minutes, making him a multidimensional problem for any opponent.

Delgado, the man tasked with channeling that threat in the gym, carries his own impressive credentials. The 28-year-old MMA Lab product holds an 11-2 record and actually eclipses Sandhagen in several striking metrics, landing 7.48 significant strikes per minute at 54 percent accuracy. Notably, he and Sandhagen share the same height at five-foot-eleven and both fight out of a switch stance, making Delgado a logical and unusually precise training partner for the role.

Why it matters

  • Bautista faces a significant rankings jump, as Sandhagen sits seven spots above him at number three in the division
  • Delgado's physical similarities to Sandhagen — matching height, stance, and a comparable reach — give Bautista's camp an unusually authentic simulation
  • The style matchup pits Bautista's grappling-heavy output against Sandhagen's well-rounded striking, making specific preparation especially valuable
