Women's MMA in a 'lull' at UFC with zero title fights through mid-2026
Quick read

Nearly one-third of the UFC's 24 events in 2026 have featured no women's bouts at all, and there have been zero women's title fights since Valentina Shevchenko defeated Zhang Weili last November. Women have not headlined a UFC event since January 2025, and only one women's title fight is currently scheduled for the remainder of the year — Mackenzie Dern defending her strawweight belt against Gillian Robertson at UFC 330. Managers and industry figures describe the moment as a notable 'lull', marked by a lack of marquee matchups and fan anticipation.

Women's mixed martial arts is experiencing a significant slowdown inside the UFC, with industry figures and managers openly describing the current moment as a "lull" that has left fans and fighters waiting for marquee action.

The numbers tell a stark story. Nearly one-third of the UFC's 24 events in 2026 have featured no women's bouts whatsoever. The last women's title fight took place last November, when Valentina Shevchenko defeated Zhang Weili. Since then, no woman has headlined a UFC event — a stretch that dates back to January 2025. With the calendar already deep into the summer, only one women's championship bout is currently scheduled for the rest of the year.

That bout is set for UFC 330 on August 15, where strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern will defend her belt against Gillian Robertson. Robertson, 31, carries a 17-8 record and holds the fifth ranking in the strawweight division. The Canadian fighter trains out of The Goat Shed Academy and brings a grappling-heavy approach, averaging 2.76 takedowns per 15 minutes and 0.9 submission attempts per 15 minutes.

Shevchenko, the reigning flyweight champion whose win over Zhang Weili last November remains the last women's title fight in the promotion, is 38 years old and holds a 26-4-1 record. The Kyrgyzstan-born southpaw has built her legacy on technical precision, connecting at a 52 percent striking accuracy rate. Zhang Weili, ranked first in the strawweight division at 36, went into that November bout with a 26-4 record and one of the most prolific striking outputs in the women's game at 5.15 significant strikes landed per minute.

Why it matters

  • Women's divisions lack a scheduled title fight until mid-August, a months-long gap that diminishes divisional momentum
  • No woman has topped a UFC card since January 2025, reducing the visibility of women's MMA on the biggest stages
  • The Robertson-Dern bout at UFC 330 carries added weight as the sole women's championship event on the current schedule
  • Managers and industry voices flagging the issue publicly suggests pressure on the UFC to address the gap in programming
