Robert Whittaker has set his sights on Magomed Ankalaev, publicly calling out the top-ranked light heavyweight contender as his preferred next opponent.

Whittaker, nicknamed "The Reaper," is making his presence felt at 205 pounds with a direct challenge to one of the division's biggest names. The 35-year-old Australian carries a 28-9 record and sits at number 12 in the light heavyweight rankings. A volume striker who lands 4.41 significant strikes per minute, Whittaker brings legitimate finishing threat to the division despite his current ranking suggesting he has ground to make up on the contenders above him.

Ankalaev, the man Whittaker wants, is ranked number one in the light heavyweight division and fifth pound-for-pound in the world. The 34-year-old Russian from Gorets Fight Club owns a 22-2-1 record and has built a reputation as one of the most complete fighters in the weight class. He lands 3.65 significant strikes per minute at an impressive 52 percent accuracy, and while his takedown output is modest at 0.79 per 15 minutes, he blends grappling threat with sharp, efficient striking.

Whittaker also acknowledged that Bogdan Guskov would represent a strong matchup. Ranked 11th in the division, the 33-year-old from Uzbekistan carries an 18-4-1 record and is one of the more dangerous strikers in the weight class, landing 4.57 significant strikes per minute at 55 percent accuracy. Guskov's six-foot-three frame and 76-inch reach, or 193 cm, give him a considerable physical edge, and he averages 0.7 submission attempts per 15 minutes, adding a submission dimension to his game. Whittaker noted that several other names remain in circulation and made clear he sees no shortage of worthwhile opponents at light heavyweight.

Why it matters

  • Ankalaev is the top-ranked contender at light heavyweight, making this a potential title-eliminator conversation
  • A win over Ankalaev or Guskov would vault Whittaker significantly up the divisional rankings from his current 12th spot
  • All three fighters are orthodox strikers with high output, pointing toward an action-heavy standup contest regardless of which matchup materializes
