Charles Johnson calls for Fight Night headliner vs. Royval, Horiguchi, or Taira
Quick read

Charles Johnson is pushing for a quick turnaround and wants to headline a UFC Fight Night card against one of three flyweights: Brandon Royval, Kyoji Horiguchi, or Tatsuro Taira. Johnson's top preference is Royval, citing their previous bout in LFA and calling a rematch a potential fight of the year. Johnson is 2-2 in 2026 and is aiming for a fifth fight in a calendar year, which would be a career first.

Charles Johnson is making his intentions clear heading into the second half of 2026, publicly calling for a UFC Fight Night main event slot against one of three flyweight contenders: Brandon Royval, Kyoji Horiguchi, or Tatsuro Taira.

Tatsuro Taira

Johnson, who goes by "InnerG," carries a 20-9 record and is currently 2-2 on the year. The 35-year-old American, who trains out of Murcielago MMA, fights out of a switch stance and brings legitimate offensive volume to the table, landing 4.6 significant strikes per minute at 49 percent accuracy. His top preference among the three targets is Royval, whom he has faced previously under the LFA banner — a history he believes makes a rematch a natural headline candidate with fight-of-the-year potential. Johnson is also eyeing a fifth fight in 2026, which would be a personal milestone he has never reached in a single calendar year.

Royval, nicknamed "Raw Dawg," is ranked third in the flyweight division and holds an 18-9 record. The 34-year-old southpaw out of Factory X is one of the more active and entertaining fighters in the weight class, posting an eye-catching 5.6 significant strikes per minute, and he is no stranger to submission attempts, averaging 1.2 per 15 minutes.

Tatsuro Taira, ranked fourth at flyweight, represents a different kind of challenge. The 26-year-old Japanese fighter from The Blackbelt Japan carries an 18-2 record and blends clean striking — 60 percent accuracy, the highest among the three options — with a consistent grappling attack of 3.12 takedowns per 15 minutes.

Why it matters

  • Johnson is seeking a fifth fight in one calendar year, a career first that would require the UFC to grant a quick turnaround
  • A Royval rematch carries built-in history from their LFA meeting and would pit two high-volume strikers against each other at 125 pounds
  • Both Royval (ranked 3rd) and Taira (ranked 4th) are well inside the divisional top five, meaning a win for Johnson would carry significant ranking implications
