Jeff Monson has retired from competition for the second time after dropping a four-round decision to Ivan Sholtoianu in their IBA Legend heavyweight title boxing bout at IBA.PRO 21 in Brest, Belarus, on October 25, Bloody Elbow reported. Sholtoianu, 59, took the fight 40-36 on the scorecards, and both men announced their retirements once the result was made official.

The 55-year-old Monson ends his career with an MMA record of 61-27-3. Our records list him at 60-26-1, so the totals differ slightly. Fighting out of American Top Team, the American stands five-foot-nine, 175 cm, with a 74-inch reach, and fought from an orthodox stance. Nicknamed The Snowman, he was long known as a wrestling-based heavyweight, with career averages of 1.06 takedowns per 15 minutes and 0.7 submission attempts per 15 minutes. His striking was modest by comparison: 0.97 significant strikes landed per minute at 30 percent accuracy, which makes a boxing-only contest a notable change of discipline.

Monson's peak at the top of the sport came in the UFC. His most recent recorded fight in our database is his unanimous-decision loss to Tim Sylvia at UFC 65 on November 18, 2006, a five-round heavyweight title challenge. That came after a first-round knockout of Anthony Perosh at UFC 61 in July of that year and a split-decision win over Marcio Cruz at UFC 59 in April. He therefore went into the Sylvia fight on a two-fight winning streak.

Sholtoianu is the older man by four years, 59 against Monson's 55. The result extends a pattern for Monson, who has now lost both a UFC title challenge and an IBA Legend title fight by unanimous decision, though nearly two decades and a change of sport separate the two.

Why it matters

  • Monson's exit closes the book on one of the longest careers among former UFC heavyweight title challengers, spanning more than 90 recorded MMA bouts.
  • The IBA Legend heavyweight title has an old-timers' format, and with both men stepping away, the result marks a double farewell rather than the start of a new run.
  • The fight shows how far Monson's game stretched beyond wrestling and submissions, given that his career numbers show grappling as his main weapon.
