Cain Velasquez has revealed that Daniel Cormier once told him he did not want to fight Brock Lesnar, offering a possible explanation for why one of heavyweight's most anticipated matchups never took place.

Velasquez, who faced Lesnar in 2010, shared the story of Cormier's reluctance. The two heavyweights built heavy hype with a heated cage face-off, but the bout was never made. Cormier went on to become one of the few fighters to hold UFC titles in two divisions and is widely regarded as one of the sport's greats.

The fighters

Velasquez, 44, is 14-3-0 and fought out of American Kickboxing Academy. He landed 6.37 significant strikes per minute at 57 percent accuracy and averaged 5.13 takedowns per 15 minutes. His most recent recorded fight was a first-round TKO loss to Francis Ngannou on February 17, 2019.

Lesnar, 49, is 5-3-0. He lands 3.53 significant strikes per minute but at a 72 percent accuracy rate, and averages 3.9 takedowns per 15 minutes. His most recent recorded fight, against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on July 9, 2016, was overturned to a no contest.

Cormier, 47, is 22-3-0. He lands 4.25 significant strikes per minute at 52 percent accuracy and averages 1.83 takedowns per 15 minutes. His most recent recorded fight was a unanimous decision loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 252 on August 15, 2020.

Why it matters

  • Velasquez knows Lesnar's game firsthand. He stopped Lesnar in the first round at UFC 121 on October 23, 2010, to win the heavyweight title.
  • The physical gap was significant on paper: Lesnar is six-foot-three with an 81-inch reach, while Cormier is five-foot-eleven with a 72-inch reach, a nine-inch difference.
  • Lesnar's takedown average of 3.9 per 15 minutes is more than double Cormier's 1.83, though Cormier's wrestling pedigree is a central part of his reputation.

The matchup remains one of MMA's great what-ifs, and Velasquez's account adds a new wrinkle to the debate over why it never materialized.
