What did the 600-fight UFC study find?

Dixson, Sherlock, Cornwell, and Kasumovic tested the claim against real UFC results. Their sample ran from UFC 71 on May 26, 2007, through UFC 194 on December 12, 2015. It covered 600 fights and 395 fighters.

Bearded competitors won 49.3% of the fights in which the comparison applied. That is almost a coin flip. The model found no clear relationship between a full beard and overall fighting success. The full-beard estimate had a p-value of .77.

The researchers then separated endings that could fit the protection claim. The source data contained 83 KOs and 118 TKOs. After missing observations were handled, the reported KO/TKO model contained 200 fights. Facial hair still did not predict the winner at the usual statistical cutoff.

The three-category model compared clean-shaven fighters, full beards, and other facial hair. Its full-beard estimate produced p=.097 in KO/TKO endings. A second version grouped every non-full beard together. That test produced p=.133.

Neither result proves the effect is exactly zero. Both fail to give clear evidence of knockout protection. That is the useful distinction.

How did the study measure beards and outcomes?

The researchers did more than check profile photos. Assistants who did not know the predictions scored images and video from the actual fights. That matters because a fighter can change his facial hair between appearances.

They first recorded ten styles. Those styles were then grouped into three practical categories:

  • clean-shaven;
  • a trimmed or bushy full beard;
  • other facial hair, such as stubble, a moustache, or a goatee.

The analysis used a Bradley-Terry model, which suits repeated pairwise contests. It accounted for the fact that many fighters appeared more than once. The model also included previous result, height, reach, and stance.

Individual fighter identity mattered strongly. That makes sense. Skill, defense, durability, tactics, and opponent level travel with the fighter. A beard is only one visible feature layered over all of them.

The authors also ran 1,000 randomized power tests. They estimated their model would usually detect an effect if bearded fighters won about 58% of matchups. The observed 49.3% sits far below that mark.

The study could detect a fairly large advantage. It could still miss a small one.

Why does a 49.3% win rate not settle every question?

Raw win percentage is not a clean causal test. Matchmakers do not randomly assign beards. Fighters choose their own grooming, and the same fighter may look different across bouts.

Suppose a wrestler grows a beard during a winning run. His facial hair rises alongside his win rate. The beard did not create his takedowns.

The Bradley-Terry approach handles repeated matchups better than a simple tally. It still cannot balance every hidden factor. Betting odds, training injuries, style matchups, and the exact location of each strike were not fully modeled.

The 49.3% figure also describes wins among the study's beard comparisons. It is not a universal win rate for every bearded UFC fighter. You should not carry it into another era as a fixed law.

What did the sheepskin impact test show?

The lab evidence answers a narrower question. Beseris, Naleway, and Carrier covered synthetic bone pieces with domestic sheepskin. They prepared 20 furred, 20 sheared, and 20 plucked samples.

The furred hair was about 8 cm long. The sheared hair was about 0.5 cm. A 4.70 kg blunt striker dropped from 7.4 cm onto each sample.

The fully furred condition handled that test best. Nine of 20 furred samples failed, a 45% rate. Nineteen of 20 sheared samples failed, or 95%. All 20 plucked samples failed.

The force and energy readings moved in the same direction. Furred samples reached a mean peak force of 0.68±0.16 kN. Plucked samples reached 0.79±0.10 kN, while sheared samples reached 0.77±0.09 kN.

Furred samples absorbed 2.46±0.43 J on average. The plucked and sheared groups absorbed 1.70±0.34 J and 1.80±0.43 J. Hair also spread the load over more time.

Those are real mechanical differences under the study's setup. They support a possible cushioning effect. They do not reproduce an MMA punch.

Why is padding different from knockout protection?

A knockout is not a synthetic plate cracking under a vertical weight. Brain injury depends on how the head moves after impact. Direction, rotation, acceleration, timing, and repeated strikes all matter.

The lab test measured force, absorbed energy, loading time, and failure in small flat samples. It did not measure human heads, brain motion, consciousness, or referee stoppages. The target was fixed on an anvil.

Sheep fleece also differs sharply from a human beard. The paper reports denser, finer fibers in the fleece. Its 8 cm furred condition best resembles a long, thick beard, not ordinary stubble.

The lab authors state the boundary plainly. Their results provide no evidence that beards prevent knockouts. They saw possible relevance to skin cuts and facial bone fractures instead.

No study here tracked beard density against verified cuts, fractures, or strike locations. The mechanical result gives a reason to test that question.

What can MMA injury data add?

Lystad, Gregory, and Wilson reviewed six MMA injury studies. They estimated 228.7 injuries per 1,000 athlete-exposures, with a wide 95% confidence interval from 110.4 to 473.5. Variation between studies was high.

The head accounted for 66.8% to 78.0% of reported injuries. Lacerations or abrasions ranged from 36.7% to 59.4%. Fractures ranged from 7.4% to 43.3%, while concussion ranged from 3.8% to 20.4%.

These ranges show why lower-face protection is a fair research question. They do not compare bearded and clean-shaven fighters. The review cannot tell you whether facial hair changes any injury rate.

It also found losers suffered about three times as many injuries as winners. That creates another trap. If better fighters happen to wear more beards, their lower injury burden could look protective. Skill would be doing the work.

Do famous bearded fighters prove anything?

Khabib Nurmagomedov, Khamzat Chimaev, and Islam Makhachev make the myth feel easy to test. Each is a recognizable example of an elite fighter seen with a full beard.

Their careers cannot isolate facial hair. They differ in defense, pace, wrestling, opposition, age, and thousands of training decisions. Comparing one of them with a clean-shaven striker would mostly compare two fighters.

Knockout clips pose the same problem. One bearded fighter surviving one clean shot says nothing about the wider rate. Anecdotes skip the denominator and impact quality.

The better comparison follows the same fighters across beard lengths. It then measures clean strikes to similar targets and tracks medical outcomes. The 2018 study lacked enough within-fighter changes for that test.

Should facial hair enter a UFC prediction model?

No verified evidence supports using a beard as a predictive feature. The real-fight study found no clear win or KO/TKO signal. The lab study measured a different outcome in a different material.

Facial hair would also be a noisy input. It can change between media day, weigh-ins, and fight night. Photos vary in lighting and angle. A model could learn visual shortcuts linked to identity or region instead of fight skill.

That is false precision. Better features include opponent-adjusted performance, age, activity, weight class, and market information. Each still needs out-of-sample testing.

If future medical data link measured beard density with fewer cuts, that finding could matter for injury models. It would not automatically improve winner predictions. Different targets need different evidence.

How solid is this data?

The UFC study is the best direct evidence because it used real fights and fight-night images. Its 600-fight sample is useful, and its code is public. The repeated-contest model is stronger than comparing two raw totals.

The sample still ends in 2015. UFC tactics, roster depth, matchmaking, and data quality can change across eras. The study included repeated fighters and could not randomize grooming. It did not count jaw strikes or confirm which blow caused each stoppage.

Its power analysis targeted a fairly large win effect, near 58%. Smaller effects could escape detection. The KO/TKO subset was also only 200 analyzed fights.

The impact study offers controlled mechanics, but external validity is weak. Sixty coupons are not 60 fighters. Sheep fleece, epoxy, a fixed target, and one drop test leave a long path to the Octagon.

The injury review gives broad context, not a beard comparison. Its six studies used different methods, and the pooled injury estimate had a wide interval. None sorted injuries by facial hair.

The sound conclusion is narrow. Beards have not shown a useful UFC knockout or win advantage. Local cushioning against some facial injury remains possible, but direct human evidence is missing.
