Quick read

Carlos Prates and Ian Garry have discussed a plan that would see them meet in a title fight. According to Prates, Garry called him approximately three weeks ago to outline the scenario. The plan involves Prates defeating Maddalena while Garry beats Islam Makhachev for the title, leading to a championship bout between the two in Brazil. Prates suggests that if Garry wins the belt, they would have a rematch of sorts. The post acknowledges the ambitious nature of the plan while questioning its realistic implementation, as both fighters would need to win their respective upcoming fights for this scenario to materialize.

Carlos Prates has revealed that Ian Garry reached out to him roughly three weeks ago with an elaborate plan that could culminate in a welterweight title fight between the two, potentially on Brazilian soil.

Prates, known as "The Nightmare," is currently ranked fifth in the welterweight division and holds a 24-7 record. The 32-year-old Brazilian trains out of Vale Top Team and brings serious offensive output to the table, averaging 3.77 significant strikes per minute at 55 percent accuracy. Standing six-foot-one with a 78-inch reach, the switch-stance striker presents a difficult puzzle for any opponent.

The scenario Garry laid out requires both men to handle their respective business first. Prates must get past his own upcoming opponent, Maddalena, while Garry would need to dethrone reigning welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. Should both come through, Garry apparently envisions a championship rematch of sorts against Prates in Brazil.

Makhachev, the man standing between Garry and that belt, is no easy obstacle. The 34-year-old Russian champion carries a 28-1 record and operates at an elite level across all phases, averaging 3.2 takedowns per 15 minutes and landing strikes at a remarkable 58 percent accuracy rate. He is currently the pound-for-pound top-ranked fighter in the sport.

Why it matters

  • A Prates win over Maddalena would reinforce his top-five welterweight status and build momentum toward a title shot.
  • Garry defeating Makhachev would represent one of the biggest upsets in recent welterweight history and immediately set up marquee title defenses.
  • A potential title fight in Brazil would add significant stakes and atmosphere to what both fighters are framing as a future grudge match.

Prates himself acknowledged the ambitious nature of the plan, with both fighters needing to clear major hurdles before any such matchup could become reality.
