Ilia Topuria has revealed how close his fight with Islam Makhachev came to being officially announced for the White House event. According to Topuria, he knew just a couple of hours before the card announcement that he would be fighting Makhachev and that the bout would be revealed. However, he then received a call informing him that Islam had sustained an injury and he would instead face Justin Gaethje. Topuria says he went to sleep believing he would fight Islam, only to be woken by numerous phone calls with the news of the change. Despite the disappointment, Topuria expressed that he is not discouraged and believes the fight should happen sooner or later.
