Five-time world champion and 1976 Olympic gold medalist Nikolai Balboshin shared how he developed his signature suplex throw in an interview. The technique was born out of determination after a coach dismissed him as just a "pusher," motivating Balboshin to prove himself through technical excellence. He trained the movement extensively using spring-loaded equipment, performing 100 repetitions on each side three times daily after morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. Balboshin explained that mastering the hip drive was crucial, working heavily with training dummies to perfect the explosive lifting motion. Eventually he became so proficient that he could execute the throw in either direction, adapting to whatever stance his opponents preferred. His grip strength became so formidable that training partners would ask him to release because they couldn't breathe.
